Sonia, Chidambaram differed over gold row

While Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi said to be wants the curbs on gold to be removed, Finance Minister P Chidambaram is learnt to hve opposed to the idea.

According to sources, Sonia wants the curbs on gold be removed at least to a certain extent, since Lok Sabha elections are fast approaching and people are unhappy with the governments restrictions.

However, Chidambaram, who is in Davos to attend the World Economic Forum meeting, said the government had no plans to roll back the curbs on gold imports.

"Until we have a firm grip on the current account deficit I do not contemplate any roll back in any measure. We will have a full idea of the current account deficit only when the budget is presented and when the year comes to an end," Chidambaram said.

He said this while replying to a query on an television report which claimed that Sonia Gandhi had written to the government asking for gold import restrictions to be eased.
